The vampire queen smiled at me, her eyes sparkling with cunning. She waved her hand and the world swirled around me once more, the either carrying me away from her. It spit me out in the courtyard in front of the Shadow Guild tower.

I blinked.

What the hell was I doing here?

The sky above was dark. Clouds drifted in front of a bright moon, casting dappled shadows on the stone tower.

Annoyance surged through me. I’d thought she’d said I would get to prove myself. Yet she’d sent me home like I’d already failed.

And she’d kept Drakon.

None of this seemed right.

I started toward the tower, determined to get a transport charm from Eve and return to the queen’s castle. She’d grant me entrance to the Black Forest, no matter what it took.

As I neared the tower, I noticed smoke curling up from the roof. I frowned, squinting at it. There wasn’t a chimney on that part of the roof.

Dread unfurled within me.

The smoke grew thicker, and brilliant orange flames burst through the windows. Glass shattered, flying outward in a glittering explosion. Fire licked up from the windows, eating away at the rose vines.

My friends.

Fear exploded within me, and I raced forward. Screams sounded from inside, horribly familiar. Carrow and Eve, Beatrix and Seraphia. Even Quinn was there.

They were all inside.

Shit, shit, shit.

There was so much fire—how could I possibly get to them all?

Doubt crept in, but I shoved it away.

As I neared, another explosion tore through the building. Jets of flame shot from the windows, and the force of it threw me backward. Cold fear mixed with the heat that scorched my skin.

It was an impossible inferno.

The screams sounded again and hope flared.

They were still alive.

I scrambled upright and staggered toward the blazing building. It was entirely engulfed now, the flames billowing from the door.

How was I supposed to get in there to help them?

My new magic. There had to be something there I could use.

Come on, damn it.

I shook my hands, trying to call upon my strange new power. I’d discovered crazy new gifts in the last couple weeks—surely one of those gifts would protect me while I went inside to help my friends.

And yet, my magic stayed dormant inside me. No matter how desperately I tried to access it, nothing happened. My soul was as cold and dead as a tomb.

By the time I reached the front door of the tower, I still hadn’t found a power that would help me rescue them.

I just wasn’t strong enough. Wasn’t worthy.

It didn’t matter.

I still had to try.

I waited until the flames in the doorway died down briefly, then pulled my shirt up over my mouth to filter out the smoke and plowed through the front door. Fear turned my limbs to jelly as I staggered through the main room. No one was within, and flames licked up the walls and devoured the furniture.

The heat stole my breath as I fought my way toward the stairs and started up a narrow path through the flames.
